WELCOME, SCOPE O2

THE OFF-ROAD EXPERT

After one-and-a-half year of product development, we are happy to launch our first off-road specific wheelset, the all new O2. The wheelset is especially intended for the use on gravel-and XC mountain bikes.

When we started the development process for the O2, it was our aim to develop a benchmark-setting off-road. While most of the industry-leading brands focus on only one specific area like weight, lateral stiffness, comfort, or durability, both of Scope’s co-founders, Rik Kusters and Nieck Busser, wanted to combine all important product characteristics in one all-round wheelset, thereby ticking all the boxes.

Optimized Weight and Measurements

In order to determine the industry standards for each of the product characteristics, we tested several of wheelsets of our main competitors. Furthermore, we conducted field tests and developed our own test devices. Based on these outcomes, we defined our development goals.

After several iterative tests, using a total of six prototypes, we found the perfect balance between lateral stiffness, important for efficient power transformation, and radial compliance, important for comfort, in a 23mm deep, and 31mm wide full carbon rim that also features a 3mm off-set and a 25mm internal width. Furthermore, the rim offers a tubeless-ready hookless tire bed, which we developed in cooperation with Schwalbe Tires and which makes for perfect mounting, inflation, and on-pressure properties.

Local Reinforcement Technology

It is within our philosophy, that durability goes above weight. For that reason, we made no compromises regarding the bearings, seals, spokes, and rim profile. In order to be best-in-class, we developed our own Local Reinforcement Technology (LRT) which helped us to reduce the overall weight of the O2 wheelset. This unique production technology locally reinforces the rim at the spoke holes, whereas normally the entire spoke hole section is reinforced. By making use of this unique technology, we have been able to reduce the overall wall thickness of our rims and could realize a weight reduction of 10%.

As a result, the O2 wheelset weighs only 1360g: unique in the market, given the rim width, the tubeless ready system and the overall durability of the wheelset.

Improved Stiffness and Durability

We’re convinced that wheels should be built as a system. We, therefore, optimized not only our rims but also the design of our hubs to create an optimal stiffness with an optimal spoke tension. The extra wide flange distance of 61mm for the rear hub results in a lateral stiffness of 51 N/mm for the rear wheel while the 2:1 spoke pattern combined with the 3mm off set in the rim ensures that the spoke tension of the Non-Drive Side and Drive Side are near-equal. This makes for better lateral stiffness and durability performance.

The hubs make use of a four-pawl engagement system in combination with a 34t freehub body. Furthermore, the hubs are equipped with SKF bearings, or CeramicSpeed as an upgrade option. The Scope O2 wheelset is available with boost hubs, regular hubs, and both Shimano and XD freehub bodies. We also offer different end-cap options to make the wheelset compatible with the most important quick release and through-axle standards.

Rik Kusters: “Although we already do have over 4 years of experience in the development of carbon wheels, it was quite a challenge to develop our Scope O2 wheelset. Even though, the materials used for our O2 wheelset are equal to the materials we use in our road series wheelsets, the use and so the requirements are completely different. For that reason, the definition phase of this project took way more time than expected, and seemed to be critical in order develop the best-in-class off-road wheelset.”

Availability

The new Scope O2 wheelset will be available from November 2017 for a recommended retail price of 1.398,00 EUR, the same price as our R series wheelsets.
